Cancellation of NSW Branch ASM – March 13-14, Newcastle

It is with great disappointment that unfortunately, we will need to cancel the upcoming NSW RANZCO ASM to be held in Newcastle on 13-14 March due to issues associated with the coronavirus (COVID-19).

After careful deliberation and discussion amongst the organisaing committee, in conjunction with Federal RANZCO, this decision has been made.

In order to protect everyone potentially attending, we have decided it best not to go ahead. Many companies and health bodies are not allowing travel to non-essential meetings or attendance at large gatherings. In addition, following a meeting on 100 specialists at another college last week, it was subsequently discovered one of the attendees may have the virus and is being tested now. If they are positive to the virus, ALL attendees are required to self-isolate for 14 days. It is untenable that there is a potential mass isolation for NSW ophthalmologists and others for weeks.

The NSW Branch ASM committee have decided that it is too risky for someone who attends the conference could have exposure to the virus and thus, ALL attendees would have to undergo quarantine.

As a result, we will be refunding any monies paid to the NSW Branch, including sponsorship fees, for the meeting.

We thank you for your understanding in this matter and happy to discuss this issue if required.
