The Future of Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology has changed dramatically in recent decades and it is likely to change dramatically over the coming decades as well. We are already seeing technical innovations that allow us to deliver better services for patients. Artificial intelligence and related computer based technologies are being used to refine how we identify, understand and treat eye conditions.

These developments will change not only which conditions can or cannot be treated, bringing significant improvements in outcomes for patients, but they will also change the way that ophthalmologists diagnose and treat patients.

RANZCO’s Future of Ophthalmology project seeks to evaluate the impact of these changes on ophthalmic education and patient care. In this way, we can ensure that ophthalmologists graduating from the RANZCO training program and those maintaining their skills through the continuing professional development program continue to be well versed on the latest technologies and innovations and continue to deliver the best possible care for their patients.
