Get Involved

RANZCO will cover the following project related expenses*
• Visa fee and return economy flights to project destination
• Accommodation for the period of the project activity within budget
• Airport transfers in Australia and New Zealand
• Meals and local travel (amount depends on location)
• Fellows are covered by the RANZCO Insurance when travelling on projects
The College will coordinate travel and accommodation for all project related activities and will provide pre-departure briefs outlining activity objectives and specific local information. The Pacific Regional Eye Health Conference is an annual conference held for Pacific Islands eye care providers.

Alex Hunyor has been invited to present at the PacEYES Conference on 19 to 20 June as a guest speaker on vitro-retinal surgery and macular disease.

External Examiners/OSCE, Cambodia

RANZCO Fellows Dr Mark Renehan and Dr David Moran participated in the final Ophthalmology Residency Program (ORP) examination at the University of Health Sciences (UHS) in Phnom Penh. Participation of external examiners enabled the promotion of capacity building among faculty and strengthen the teaching and learning environment by identifying any gaps in the process and making recommendations and attesting fair and standardized examination process.

Visiting Teaching Faculty, Regional Eye Centre, Solomon Islands

RANZCO Fellow Jeremy Smith undertook a one week diabetic retinopathy placement from 26 to 30 September at the Regional Eye Centre in Honiara, Solomon Islands. The visits are focused on service provision (selected patients needing sub-specialty care) and teaching of local ophthalmologists for REC as a diabetic eye care and NCD training facility, and increasing the technical capacity of the REC to provide services that are unavailable at present, but that still has a high demand.

Fellow Garry Brien represented RANZCO at the Eye Health Development workshop and the ophthalmology residency program coordination and planning workshop on 15 and 16 August, facilitated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and Vision 2020 Australia with funding from the Australian Government.

Gender and ophthalmology workshop – Cambodia

RANZCO, with the support of a gender expert Dr Deborah Colville developed and held a training workshop on Gender and ophthalmology for the Ophthalmology Residency Training Program faculty in Cambodia.

Multiple Choice Question workshop – Cambodia

A follow up MCQ workshop was held in January 2016 run by Andrew Thompson for Ophthalmology Residency Training program faculty members - aimed at strengthening the capacity to develop an MCQ data bank with local examiners being confident to develop appropriate exam questions.

Capacity building to run /train in Ophthalmology skills lab - Cambodia

In collaboration with the University of Health Science, RANZCO delivered ophthalmology skills lab (wetlab) training, running two Training-of-Trainers workshops for Ophthalmology Residency Program faculty and UHS skills lab personnel. The workshops were delivered by Sven Kunkel and Suheb Ahmed.

Neil Murray will lead a workshop at Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital in December to build capacity of of support staff to support returned Vietnamese fellows who have recently completed a retina Fellowship at LV Prasad supported by RANZCO.

In-country workshops were aimed at strengthening the capacity to develop an MCQ data bank with local examiners being confident to develop appropriate exam questions. The workshop run by Andrew Thompson and Patrick Locke.

Andrew Thompson and Patrick Locke facilitated the MCQ on-line project – an on-line collaboration tool supporting Ophthalmology Residency Program faculty in the development and review of MCQ questions.

Chair of the RANZCO CPD Advisory Committee for Cambodia, Richard Hart presented on oculoplastics and CPD at the COS hosted 3rd ASEAN Economic Community Ophthalmology Meeting (AECOM) in Siem Reap, Cambodia in June 2015. Richard's presentations were highly information and well received by participants.

Cathy Green and Brian Sloan attended the remediation exams in Jakarta in May 2015 to discuss further collaboration with the KOI. During the visit, KOI and RANZCO renewed the Memorandum of Understanding for another 3 years.
