RANZCO CPD Program

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) refers to the ongoing maintenance and development of knowledge, skills and attitudes related to clinical expertise as well as the non-clinical skills that ophthalmologists need such as risk management, clinical governance and professional values. This continuous cycle of learning enables an ophthalmologist to constantly improve as a practising professional, therefore benefitting patients and the community as a whole.

Both the Medical Board of Australia and the Medical Council of New Zealand have made regular participation in CPD a requirement of registration to practice medicine in their respective jurisdictions. Participation in CPD is also a requirement of College Fellowship.

The CPD Handbook (PDF 1.8MB) details the framework and requirements of the program, summarised below.

CPD Programs

Each year, all Fellows participating in the College's CPD program record the CPD activities they have undertaken into their online CPD Diary via the College website. At the close of each CPD year, Fellows have up to 31 January the following year to record all their CPD activities.

Fellows are not required to submit documentary evidence when recording their CPD activities. Each year, after 31 January, the College conducts a claims verification audit of 5% of Fellows. Fellows selected to participate in this audit will be required to provide documentary evidence to support their claims.

Fellows who have recorded CPD activities in their online CPD Diary are able to download a letter of CPD participation from within the diary.

At the end of each CPD Program cycle, CPD Compliant Fellows will receive a Certificate of Continuing Professional Development. Fellows selected to participate in the annual member audit exercise will receive the Certificate upon successful completion of the audit.

The RANZCO CPD Framework

The RANZCO CPD framework is designed to help Fellows adopt a structured approach to planning their CPD. It consists of three categories reflecting the seven key roles and attributes of a specialist ophthalmologist - Medical Expert, Communicator, Manager, Collaborator, Health Advocate, Scholar and Professional.

  • Category 1: Clinical Expertise

  • Category 2: Risk Management and Clinical Governance

  • Category 3: Professional Values

Within each category, two levels of activities are recognised:

  • "Level 1" activities include traditional, passive learning activities such as lectures, conferences and journal reading.

  • "Level 2" activities are those that focus on implementing or facilitating changes in practice and health outcomes. Examples of such activities include clinical and surgical audits, practice visits, and patient satisfaction surveys.

2018 CPD Requirement

  • Fellows - Specialist Registration (Australia, NZ and Overseas) must complete a minimum of 80 points per year including 30 points from Clinical Expertise Level 2.

  • Part-time Fellows* - General or Specialists Medical Registration (AHPRA) must complete a minimum of 80 points per year including 30 points from Clinical Expertise Level 2.

  • Fully Retired Fellows** are not required to be CPD compliant to maintain their RANZCO Fellowship.

* Part-time is defined as working no more than 2 sessions per week, or undertaking locums for no more than 6 weeks per annum.
** Fully retired Fellows are those Fellows no longer in practice or on the medical register.
