2020 Australian of the Year wraps up the RANZCO webinar series

Dr James Muecke AM, RANZCO Fellow and 2020 Australian of the Year, wrapped up RANZCO’s 11-week webinar series on Thursday night, 25 June 2020.

The final presentation, with about 117 registrants, was on the topic Blinded by Sugar which tells the story of Neil Hansell, a man who woke up one morning blind in both eyes due to the neglect of his diabetes. Dr Muecke discussed why type 2 diabetes is a growing worldwide epidemic and explored several strategies to curb the toxic impact of sugar on out health and world.

Dr Muecke was awarded Australian of the Year 2020 in Canberra on 25 January for his outstanding work in blindness prevention. In an interview with Eye2Eye, RANZCO’s quarterly magazine, Dr Muecke expressed that for the next year (and beyond), he wants to work with the Australian government and continue to raise awareness of the blinding complications of diabetes.
